Ally pulled into Lana’s driveway. With her best friend home for the time being, she couldn’t make the adjustment to consider the place hers. Lana’s car sat parked in the driveway, though Lucas’ Explorer wasn’t. He’d lingered with the other members of the Tribe who had more business to discuss. Dax had requested she attend a meeting at Sierra’s place later, but for the time being, she’d seize the seconds away from the grief and the nightmare of a task mounting before them.

She sucked in a deep breath and cracked her car door open. If her best friend happened to be home, emotions-talks were probably in order. Even if Ally drove roundabouts around her feelings, Lana had a way of directing her straight down the path no matter how often she tried to find a detour. Ally wove her way to the front door, her chest scooped hollow after the send-off this morning.

It creaked open before she touched the handle.

Lana waited inside, the stiff black dress from before ditched in favor of sweats and a hoodie. Ally fired a lazy salute and kicked her heels off, watching them slide across the hardwood.

“Did you drive two miles an hour?” Lana teased, a low amusement in her voice.

“Stopped in the street to stare at some birds,” Ally said, tugging her dress up and over her head. “All that time around the Red Rock wolves and I’m picking up their bad behavior.” She stalked to the laundry basket she’d left by the couch and pulled on a clean pair of plaid pajama pants and gray tank top. No way would she maintain any level of civilized until she had to step up later.

“Did you want some coffee?” Lana asked, walking to the kitchen.

“Tea for me,” Ally said, running a hand through her waves as she strode in after her. Her feet on the floor barely grounded her, not like Drew’s presence did. Deep down, they both understood why, no matter how much they fought the bond. She let out a long breath. Her entire body felt bruised, the exhaustion increasing at a slow and steady pulse.

Already, Lana bustled around the kitchen, her coffeemaker gurgling and the electric kettle clicked on. Ally wandered over to the hickory cupboard, cracking it open to snag a bag of Earl Grey. Out of all the teas Lana cycled through, she always kept that one stocked. Lana’s stare burrowed into her.

“Is this your version of subtle? Stare any harder and you’ll be shooting laser beams out of those things,” Ally cracked, tugging down two mugs from the cabinets.

Lana crossed her arms over her chest, not bothering with the glimpses anymore. “You and Drew.”

“Are mortal enemies,” Ally responded, refusing to look at her bestie. “Every time he opens his mouth I’m tempted to grab the hair-cutting shears from my station and let loose with the pointy end.”

The electric kettle boiled, and Ally snagged it to pour the piping hot water into her cup. Lana nabbed the mug and began fixing herself a cup of coffee, drowning it in sugar.
